TLV Warden Application
User Name/Nick: Jae
User DW: N/A
E-mail/Plurk/Discord/PM to a character journal/alternate method of contact: PM journal, plurk.
Other Characters Currently In-Game: David Collins
Character Name: Cho Edwin Buck (formerly Yellow)
Series: Malevolent (Podcast)
Age: Simultaneously ageless and also about two.
From When?: Shortly after the end of S4; when he slipped off the ship before, he ended up in the Dreamlands, where he would have been after S4 in the uninterrupted timeline.
Warden Justification:
Edwin absolutely has the capacity to help an inmate achieve graduation. He's kind, determined, largely nonjudgemental of even the worst behavior (everything comes from somewhere, after all), and he was an inmate himself. He knows not only the frustration of that position, of being stuck, of feeling trapped against your will, but also the triumph of finding the way through. He cares deeply, feels strongly, and will experiment with what kind of support an inmate needs to find their own way to freedom.
Item:
The broken shards of his former crown, which will form a kind of levitating compass when he takes them out of his pocketdimension.
Abilities/Powers:
He's a baby god, which means there's a helluva lot he can do and influence, but he's also absolutely not more powerful than the Admiral. He didn't have a physical form of his own until he graduated, existing as a spirit with limited ability to interact with the world. Now, he has a vessel that can contain his spirit which allows him full access to his abilities. Many of which he still has no conscious knowledge of. That said, he's not all-powerful. He can't travel between universes unassisted, has no omnipotent view of past or future, and can't exert influence over the Barge outside of floods or accidents. He also won't use his abilities on anyone without permission, outside of emergency scenarios. (And even emergency scenarios will entail OOC permission, of course.)
Wardening Strategies and Philosophies:
The Barge is home. Edwin loves it on board. It's how he learned who he was, who he wanted to be--he had the chance here, even with all the chaos. That said, having been an inmate and having been trapped in someone else's eyes before that, he understands the resentment of being kept somewhere against one's will all too well. He views his job as a warden less as an ally of the Admiral and more as an ally to the people who didn't choose to come on board. Or at least didn't fully understand what they were getting into. Yes, he wants to get a deal--but that's almost secondary to giving someone another chance at life. A better life. He knows how much that opportunity can come to mean.
His wardening strengths are patience, compassion, willingness to understand, and a willingness to be wrong and to learn. He'll try to ally with his inmate(s), help them find the small joys that lead to the bigger ones that lead to a life worth living. His weaknesses, well. He's very easy to lie to, he's terrible at lying himself, and he has the self-esteem of a well-educated amoeba. He'd be a good fit for someone who's lost their faith or hope for betting things, someone who needs attentiveness and gentleness, or someone who doesn't believe that others are every honest or truly capable of unselfish kindness. He'd also, ironically, be a good fit for the ultraviolent or non-human inmates who don't see the value in human lives. He probably wouldn't be a good fit for an unapologetic manipulator.
Deal:
First and foremost, return to life/restore to sanity the people whose lives he ruined while pursuing John and Arthur/when he worked with Larson. Though he'd work for two deals if he needed one for each set of sins.
History:
His canon history can be found here. His time on the Barge changed the events of canon slightly, but that's detailed below along with his the highlights of his time on the Barge.
When he came to the barge, the best way to describe him was 'feral.' He didn't trust or like humans, didn't trust or like anyone, but very much had spicy kitten energy in the sense that he was too curious to stay aggressive all the time. His biggest obstacles to graduation at the time were his sense of identity (or lack thereof) and the lack of value he saw in human/mortal life. Relationships, patience, and a lot of false starts and anxious conversations brought him close to the finish line--and then a canon update punted him back a few hundred yards, traumatizing him enough to bring that feral distrust and hate back to the surface. During this time, he killed someone who reminded Edwin of an enemy he met during his canon update, brutally, and had to recon not only with how he felt about doing it, but how the people around him felt about it. That was his final turning point, particularly when friends and even strangers were far kinder about it than he ever expected them to be. He started actively working on creating an identity for himself, figuring out who he was and what he liked and wanted for his life, and graduated not long after that. Having a distinct personal identity didn't fix the self-worth issue, unfortunately.
His canon update deviates from canon in that he remained aware of the barge during his time away. While the Yellow of canon took Larson's lessons and demands and performed them as aggressively as he knew how, exercising his limited power through Larson's "immortal" body, Edwin didn't want to. He tried briefly to persuade Larson not to pursue his Evil Plots, but that didn't go very well, and Edwin in the end had to obey to protect himself rather than because it gave him any sense of control or power. That still haunts him, and is largely the reason for his proposed deal with the admiral. When he slipped off the ship the second time, he ended up in the Dreamlands, where one of his Bargefathers found him and traveled with him to Ulthar. They stayed there together for about two months, before Jedao was called back to the Barge. Edwin himself stayed longer, until the Admiral was able to find him too.
Sample Network Entry:
[ He doesn't look at the screen when he starts talking, instead staring slightly down and to the side as he gives one earlobe a fidgety tug.]
Ah, hi, hello. [His voice is soft and warm and increases the overall impression of a nervous public speaker.]
I'm... Well, right, first, I'm Edwin. Cho Edwin Buck, for those who know my fathers. Which for those who don't, that's, uh, Hakkai and Jedao. Which is all to say, I've been here before, as both an inmate and a warden, and I had to- to leave for a while, but it looks like I'm back, so--
[Right, what was he saying. Edwin gives a small, awkward laugh and finally gets himself to look at the camera proper.]
Uh, good to be back. To be-- home. [There's an odd look on his face when he says the last word, but he mentally shakes it off.] For those who, who don't know me, which is probably a lot of people by now I would imagine, my older brother is John Doe. I'm- like him, I'm a bit of a god. I am a god, I-- oh hush.
[The croaky meow that interrupted him makes him grin, and the sense of tension drops. If anyone can understand animals, the overall message is: "You're not important enough to be this nervous."]
Uh, right, anyway, I just wanted to say hello, and introduce myself, and uh, volunteer my power to anyone who might need it for a project they're working on. Or if any inmate needs something from the Admiral, you can let me know?
[His grin goes crooked with irony.]
If you feel like trusting a stranger.
