He pulls the onion pot closer to the edge of the desk so they can examine it. "Which branch would be best, do you think?"

"John said there's a port soon. He said he would let me use some of his spending money." Gonna get presents.

He draws himself back to the moment, looking at the onion. "A strong side shoot with no flowers."

"Well, don't spend everything on us," Jedao murmurs. "You..." his voice chokes, very slightly, just for a moment. "You gave me such a good gift already, when you took care of me," he murmurs. Then picks out one sturdy, branching stem.
