The room is a warm, cozy study, with a desk with a shimmery, nacreous finish. There's a tradition inkstone and brush set for calligraphy, and a pattern stones set (which is identical to a Go set), and several potted plants. The two largest have little happy faces in a cartoony style painted on the pots. They're sort of leaning into each other, like friends.
"The onion is from the world I came from," Jedao tells him, showing Edwin which pot is which. "It was a present from...a man who gave me a place to be, after...the time you met me during the flood. I think he knew that I needed something to take care of. The garlic plant -" The one in the other painted pot, "- was a gift from Hakkai, shortly after we met. He's responsible for most of the rest, too." They've kept mostly to the theme of aromatics, although some of the others are herbs rather than alliums.
He makes a quiet, appreciative noise at the plants, giving the two smiley-face pots an extra gentle pet on their leaves. He names a handful of the other ones quietly, mostly as practice for himself, muttering their names in several languages, quiet enough that an average person would have trouble hearing.
"Does Hakkai like plants? Would a plant be a good wedding present?"
"Well, don't spend everything on us," Jedao murmurs. "You..." his voice chokes, very slightly, just for a moment. "You gave me such a good gift already, when you took care of me," he murmurs. Then picks out one sturdy, branching stem.

He pulls the onion pot closer to the edge of the desk so they can examine it. "Which branch would be best, do you think?"

He draws himself back to the moment, looking at the onion. "A strong side shoot with no flowers."
Said like someone quoting instructions from a book.

"How about this one?"
